Avete presente quando l’opening act non lo avete manco mai sentito, o
quando nel bill del festival ci sono quelle band scritte in piccolo che prima di partire dovete darci un orecchio per capire se vale la pena vederle?
Ecco, tenetevi a mente i DECAYING DAYS!
Loro sono una di quelle perle nascoste nelle profondità dell’oceano che
aspettano solo di essere colpite dal perfetto raggio di luce per abbagliare e ammaliare l’ascoltatore.
La band è in giro dal 2010, fondata da Manuel e da Nico, rispettivamente
voce e batteria, ma solo nel 2015 si plasma la corrente line-up che vede
Daniel e Tobias alle chitarre, e Hannes al basso.
Se vi i piacciono il death metal, le sonorità Opethose anni 90, i Katatonia, il metallone finandese e un pizzico di Doomettino, state leggendo l’articolo
giusto: il quintetto di Münster suona giusto come una perfetta amalgama di tutto questo.
L’ultimo album, THE UNKNOWN BEYOND, è uscito nel 2020 e se la memoria non mi inganna, la band era in cartellone al Metaldays giusto un anno prima.
L’intro della prima traccia vi tuffa nelle nere acque dell’ignoto e vi prepara a godervi un giro nell’abisso dell’oscurità.
AEONS OF SLUMBER sono 6:43 minuti di melodie dall’aldilà, catalizzate da una voce growl che butta il carico da novanta.
Manco fate a tempo a capire se volete riascoltarla o proseguire con la traccia successiva, che vi parte in cuffia A DISTANT MEMORY e con lei l’headbang di default!
Bombetta con cui non si scherza: mi piace un sacco come girano le melodie di chitarra e le parti strumentali in cui deflagra la voce sapiente e potente di Manuel Klein.
INTO YOUR EYES è una pugnalata allo stomaco che vi farà estremamente piacere ricevere: l’emozione che evapora da questa traccia è così palpabile che ne uscirete rotti ed è così che deve essere: “I feel so alone, when I look into your eyes.”
Uno a sto punto potrebbe pensare che non si può bissare la disperata bellezza di quello che ha appena sentito. Eh invece no. Dovete prepararvi a REFLECTIONS. È definitivamente la traccia dove sta il mio passaggio preferito. Il gioco tra clean vocals e voce dura, i riff veloci bloccati da sonorità eteree e ciò che avviene dopo 6:19. Ah… Quanta roba! Quanta roba!
EMBRACING SOLITUDE è totalmente strumentale, ma è una gemma che trasuda sentimento e tenebre. Quattro minuti di gioia triste.
Non è ancora finita, ragazzi. Qua si riaprono i rubinetti e dovrete strozzare di nuovo l’emozione in gola. TIME TAKES AWAY è malinconia liquida, è il cuore che si spacca, è bellezza decadente, è disperazione che torce le budella, e la chitarra che chiude il brano è semplice poesia.
FALLING DOWN ha il compito di riportavi con i piedi a terra, senza però abbassare il livello di questo bellissimo lavoro e il riff di basso regala una allure di mistero propedeutica al glorioso outro.
Come altro potrebbe chiudersi un album del genere, se non con la traccia omonima? Il perfetto sunto di un viaggio nell’oscurità e nella bellezza del unknown beyond. Emozione, dolcezza, maliconia.
Fatevi un regalo: ascoltate questo album.
La maestria e l’eleganza nel tradurre le emozioni in Musica, sono doni che alcune band hanno più di altre, e i DECAYING DAYS hanno ricevuto in regalo il pacchetto completo.

Are you familiar with the feeling of not knowing the opening act, or with the need of checking out the bands printed in small letters at the bottom of the festival bill, to decide whether they deserve your attention or you can skip their set and go drinking a beer?
Well, keep this name in mind: DECAYING DAYS!
They are one of those pearls, hidden in the depths of the ocean, just waiting to be hit by the perfect ray of light to dazzle you!
The band has been around since 2010, founded by Manuel and Nico, vocals and drums respectively, but only in 2015 the current line-up was shaped, involving Daniel and Tobias on guitars, and Hannes on bass.
If you like death metal, 90s Opeth-like sounds, Katatonia, the Finnish metal and a pinch of Doom, you are looking in the right place: the Münster quintet sounds just like a perfect amalgam of these elements.
But now, let me tell you something about their last album:
THE UNKNOWN BEYOND was released in 2020, and if my memory serves me right, the guys played at Metaldays just the year before they dropped this gem.
The intro of the first track plunges you into the black waters of the unknown and prepares you to enjoy a ride into the abyss of darkness. AEONS OF SLUMBER is 6:43 minutes of melodies from beyond, catalyzed by a growl voice which steps up the game.
While you’re still deciding if you want to wind back the track or not, you find yourself already head-banging on A DISTANT MEMORY!
You don’t mess with this one: I really like how the guitar melodies flow and I highly enjoy the wise and powerful Manuel Klein’s voice exploding into the instrumental parts.
INTO YOUR EYES is a stab in the stomach, but somehow you will be extremely happy to receive it: the emotion evaporating from this track is so palpable that you’ll come out broken and that's how it should be: “I feel so alone, when I look into your eyes."
At this point, one might think that the band cannot repeat the desperate beauty of the song which has just vanished, but well, no. You have to prepare yourself for REFLECTIONS. The guys know how to do it, and they do it well: the incisive play between clean vocals and harsh vocals is powerful, the fast riffs blocked by ethereal sounds are so charming that they open the right path for what happens after 6:19 : beauty overloaded!
EMBRACING SOLITUDE is totally instrumental, but it is a jewel that exudes sentiment and darkness. Four minutes of sad joy.
It's not over yet, my friends. It’s time to hold back tears and feel the lump in your throats again: TIME TAKES AWAY is liquid melancholy, is the heart breaking, is decadent beauty, is gut-twisting desperation, and the guitar closing the track is poetry.
FALLING DOWN has the task of bringing you back down to earth, however, in doing so, the level of this beautiful work remains unaltered, and the bass riff gives an allure of mystery which prepares the listener to the glorious outro in the most brilliant way.
The album closes up with the homonymous track: the perfect summary of a journey into the darkness and the beauty of THE UNKNOWN BEYOND. Emotion, sweetness and melancholy.

The mastery and the elegance in translating emotions into Music are gifts that some bands have more than others, and DECAYING DAYS definitely got themselves the whole package.
