Partiamo dalla fondazione della band dove, quando e perché ?!
I Violet Blend sono stati fondati nel 2014 a Firenze da me e dal batterista Michel Agostini. Conobbi Michel tramite il mio ex produttore, all’epoca avevo un progetto solista e avevo bisogno di musicisti per il tour. Dopo qualche tempo insieme ci rendemmo conto dell'incredibile feeling musicale che avevamo e così abbiamo fondato la band. Dopo qualche manovra di assestamento è finalmente arrivato a completare la formazione Ferruccio Baroni, il bassista. Dal suo ingresso nel 2017 abbiamo iniziato a lavorare sodo e il resto è storia.
Pensiamo che il vostro ultimo singolo "Voices in my Head" sia fantastico e meriti di essere ascoltato, come il vostro album "Demons", come soni nati?
Grazie di cuore, lo apprezziamo molto. Demons riprende l'idea di maschera del nostro primo album White Mask, scavando nei significati e nelle peculiarità del concetto, sviluppandone anche i valori intrinseci. In White Mask la maschera è metafora del velo in cui siamo imprigionati e che utilizziamo per comunicare tra di noi in quest'epoca di tecnologia e social networks. In Demons la maschera rappresenta tutte le personalità che una persona può avere, nel senso non patologico del termine. Le personalità - e quindi le maschere - cambiano continuamente in relazione ai sentimenti, alle idee, alle paure, alle gioie che proviamo e anche in relazione alle situazioni e alle persone che affrontiamo giorno dopo giorno. Il senso è che siamo sempre una persona diversa a seconda della situazione in cui ci troviamo, al pub con gli amici in una atmosfera rilassata avrò una personalità/maschera, ad un colloquio di lavoro in una situazione di stress ne avrò un’altra. Demons contiene tredici tracce, ogni canzone è rappresentata sulla copertina del disco da un demone proveniente da molteplici culture del mondo, dalla mitologia greca alla tradizione cinese, dalla letteratura dantesca all'impero azteco, dalla mitologia celtica ai rituali africani, ecc. Ogni demone incarna l’essenza della canzone che rappresenta, ne completa il significato e la protegge, come un amuleto di buon auspicio. L’album è stato sviluppato durante i mesi di lockdown, periodo in cui abbiamo dovuto affrontare i nostri demoni e da qui nasce il titolo.
Voices In My Head è una conversazione interiore che descrive questa perenne situazione di ansia che ristagna nella mia mente. Il brano parla di insicurezza, paura e del dubbio di non essere all'altezza. È un'urgenza furiosa, un bisogno violento di liberarsi di tutte quelle catene mentali e pensieri che ti impediscono di vivere liberamente. Quando sei esposto al pubblico sei inevitabilmente soggetto a tutti i tipi di commenti e la mia mente tende a concentrarsi sempre e solo su quelli negativi. Inizi a dubitare di te stesso e delle tue capacità, se ti lasci travolgere dai pensieri negativi diventi schiavo della tua stessa gabbia. Il brano è una risposta costruttiva a tutti i leoni da tastiera e gli hater insoddisfatti della propria vita che non aspettano altro che un pretesto per affondare il prossimo.
Parlaci delle vostre origini come musicisti.
Proveniamo tutti da percorsi musicali discretamente diversi e questo si riflette fortemente sui nostri brani, cerchiamo di rispecchiare le nostre personalità e inclinazioni musicali in ogni canzone. Io provengo dall’ambiente accademico, ho iniziato a studiare musica da piccola, il mio primo strumento è stato il sassofono, poi il canto e infine il pianoforte. Ho una laurea magistrale in musicologia, la musica tradizionale ha sempre fatto parte della mia educazione, ma il rock e il metal sono sempre stati una grande passione, infatti all’università mi sono specializzata in popular music con due tesi sull’evoluzione del rock e su Frank Zappa. Da questo provengono tutte le citazioni e le forme classiche che si ritrovano nei nostri brani. Michel ha solide radici affondate nel metal, ma è un batterista estremamente versatile con un enorme bagaglio accademico alle spalle, riesce a passare dal jazz all’heavy metal con facilità. Ferruccio è un amante del progressive e dei virtuosismi musicali, il suo stile al basso è un bel mix di sonorità e ispirazioni molto diverse tra loro, nelle nostre composizioni infatti il basso ha sempre un ruolo centrale a cui affidiamo quasi tutti i riff. Nel nostro sound non facciamo altro che unire tutti questi generi, forme e stili musicali che derivano dai nostri percorsi accademici ed artistici.
Qual'è la vostra opinione sul rock n roll? Pensate che sia ancora vivo?
Il rock ’n roll è vivo e vegeto e non morirà mai. Il fatto è che il rock non è soltanto un genere musicale, ma un’attitudine e uno stile di vita teso alla contestazione e alla ribellione contro le ingiustizie. Il rock è nato come forma di protesta e come rappresentazione del malessere generazionale ed è precisamente per questo motivo che non rientra nei nostri canoni odierni di mainstream. D’altro canto questo è anche il suo punto di forza, motivo per cui non morirà mai e ci saranno sempre persone che lo suoneranno e che lo ascolteranno. Oggigiorno siamo sommersi da un’alluvione musicale continua, la musica ha invaso ogni momento delle nostre vite ed è diventata per la maggior parte delle persone soltanto un brusio di sottofondo continuo. C’è musica ovunque, negli ascensori, nei bar, dal parrucchiere, nelle attese infinite dei call center, è questo che ha reso le persone anestetizzate nei confronti dell’ascolto attivo della musica. Il mainstream vuole questo, vuole un ascolto passivo, ciò aumenta a dismisura il potere delle case discografiche dando loro capacità decisionale senza contrasto alcuno. Se tu ascolti soltanto quello che passa la radio senza un briciolo di ricerca o interesse musicale sono loro che decidono, non tu. Fortunatamente esiste una grande fetta di pubblico che ama la musica dal profondo e che continuerà a mantenere vivo il rock ed il suo valore artistico, solo che questo non arriverà mai in televisione.
Il nostro blog cerca di fare del rock and roll la musica più ascoltata dai giovani, avete un'opinione o un consiglio?
È una bellissima missione la vostra e la condividiamo appieno. Onestamente negli ultimi anni ho notato una più alta concentrazione di giovani ai concerti rock e metal e questo fa ben sperare per le sorti del genere. Recentemente sono stata intervistata per il giornale scolastico di un liceo fiorentino e mi è stata posta la stessa domanda. La prima cosa che mi è saltata all’occhio è che su più di sessanta ragazzi che avevo davanti soltanto tre di loro avevano mai partecipato ed assistito ad un concerto. Credo che il problema nasca dalla scarsa considerazione che le nostre scuole e di conseguenza le famiglie attribuiscono alla musica e alla sua divulgazione. Il mio consiglio è quello di esortare i giovani ad andare a un concerto, a provare quella meravigliosa sensazione che è il condividere un’esperienza musicale così intensa insieme agli altri. Cantare a squarciagola, ballare e vivere l’emozione di un concerto dal vivo è quanto di più divertente ci possa essere, i giovani devono soltanto scoprire questa forma di socializzazione e tocca a noi spingerli ed esortarli.
Qual'è stato il miglior vostro concerto?
Ah beh un po’ difficile dirlo, abbiamo avuto l’onore di condividere il palco con tantissimi grandi artisti e di suonare in location spettacolari durante la nostra carriera e sceglierne soltanto uno sarà difficile. Tentando di restringere il campo, io dico Villa Ada - Roma Incontra il Mondo, era il 2019 e condividevamo il palco con i Garbage, la splendida cornice del parco di Villa Ada unita ad un pubblico caloroso creò una magia unica, porterò sempre con me un meraviglioso ricordo. Michel dice il Circolo Magnolia questo agosto, eravamo insieme ai Palaye Royale a Milano, pubblico molto giovane e incredibilmente vivace, molti di loro conoscevano Demons a memoria ed è stato molto bello. Ferruccio dice invece I-Days 2017, data di apertura ai Radiohead, era appena entrato nella band ed era soltanto il suo secondo concerto con i Violet Blend, si è trovato catapultato davanti a 65.000 persone, ma assicuro che ha retto benissimo il colpo.
Quali sono i vostri artisti preferiti?
Se dovessi scegliere una sola band da poter ascoltare all’infinito sicuramente sceglierei i Seether. Adoro la voce di Shaun Morgan e le loro canzoni sono poesia pura. Altro mio grande amore musicale è Jack White, la sua genialità mi sorprende ogni volta. Michel dice Queen, Toto e Dream Theater, per la tecnica messa a servizio della canzone ed il genio creativo. Ferruccio sceglie i Muse, per le sonorità, per la cura e la ricerca del “diverso”, i Dream Theater, per l’autenticità, lo stile singolare nel tempo sempre fedele all’era musicale in continuo cambiamento, e i Foo Fighters per la vera forza del rock ’n’ roll, la grinta e la capacità di indovinare sempre le giuste combinazioni, oltre alla maestria e all’esperienza camuffate dalla semplicità.
Parlateci del vostro primo concerto.
La nostra prima esibizione insieme fu in un bel locale di musica live a Firenze che purtroppo ha chiuso alcuni anni dopo, si chiamava Full Music. Fissammo la data direttamente con il titolare, eravamo veramente inesperti e fu una vera scommessa. Posso affermare che entrammo in modo esuberante nella scena musicale fiorentina, c'erano un centinaio di persone a quel concerto e non è così comune per la nostra città e per il primo concerto di una band appena nata.
Quella sera eravamo allo stesso tempo spaventati ed eccitati dalla folla, ma alla fine ricordo una buona performance. Se penso a tutte le cose che sono successe dopo quel primo concerto sembrano successe centinaia di anni fa, ma non è così.

Let's start from the foundation of the band where, when and why ?!
Violet Blend was founded in 2014 in Florence by me and the drummer Michel Agostini. I met Michel through my former producer, I had a solo project at the time and needed musicians for the tour. After some time together we realized the incredible musical feeling we had and so we founded the band. After a few settling maneuvers, Ferruccio Baroni, the bassist, finally arrived to complete the lineup. Since his entry in 2017 we have started working hard and the rest is history.
We think your latest single "Voices in my Head" is great and deserves to be heard, like your album "Demons", how were they born?
Thank you so much, we really appreciate it. Demons takes up the idea of a mask from our first album White Mask, digging into the meanings and peculiarities of the concept, also developing its intrinsic values. In White Mask the mask is a metaphor for the veil in which we are imprisoned and which we use to communicate with each other in this age of technology and social networks. In Demons the mask represents all the personalities that a person can have, in the non-pathological sense of the term. Personalities - and therefore masks - change continuously in relation to the feelings, ideas, fears, joys we experience and also in relation to the situations and people we face day after day. The meaning is that we are always a different person depending on the situation we find ourselves in, at the pub with friends in a relaxed atmosphere I will have one personality/mask, at a job interview in a stressful situation I will have another. Demons contains thirteen tracks, each song is represented on the album cover by a demon from multiple cultures of the world, from Greek mythology to Chinese tradition, from Dante literature to the Aztec empire, from Celtic mythology to African rituals, etc. Each demon embodies the essence of the song it represents, completes its meaning and protects it, like an auspicious amulet. The album was developed during the months of lockdown, a period in which we had to face our demons and hence the title.
Voices In My Head is an inner conversation describing this perpetual situation of anxiety that stagnates in my mind. The song talks about insecurity, fear and the doubt of not being up to it. It's a furious urge, a violent need to free yourself from all those mental chains and thoughts that prevent you from living freely. When you are exposed to the public you are inevitably subject to all kinds of comments and my mind tends to always focus on the negative ones only. You start doubting yourself and your abilities, if you let yourself be overwhelmed by negative thoughts you become a slave to your own cage. The song is a constructive response to all keyboard lions and haters dissatisfied with their lives who are waiting for nothing but a pretext to sink the next one.
Tell us about your origins as musicians.
We all come from quite different musical backgrounds and this is strongly reflected in our songs, we try to reflect our personalities and musical inclinations in each song. I come from an academic background, I started studying music as a child, my first instrument was the saxophone, then singing and finally the piano. I have a master's degree in musicology, traditional music has always been part of my education, but rock and metal have always been a great passion, in fact at university I specialized in popular music with two theses on the evolution of rock and about Frank Zappa. From this come all the quotations and the classic forms that are found in our songs. Michel has solid roots in metal, but he is an extremely versatile drummer with a huge academic background, he can switch from jazz to heavy metal with ease. Ferruccio is a lover of progressive and musical virtuosity, his bass style is a nice mix of very different sounds and inspirations, in fact in our compositions the bass always has a central role to which we entrust almost all the riffs . In our sound we do nothing but combine all these musical genres, forms and styles that derive from our academic and artistic paths.
What is your opinion on rock n roll? Do you think he's still alive?
Rock 'n roll is alive and well and will never die. The fact is that rock is not just a musical genre, but an attitude and a lifestyle aimed at protest and rebellion against injustices. Rock was born as a form of protest and as a representation of generational malaise and it is precisely for this reason that it does not fit into our current mainstream canons. On the other hand this is also its strong point, which is why it will never die and there will always be people who will play it and listen to it. Nowadays we are submerged in a continuous musical flood, music has invaded every moment of our lives and has become for most people just a continuous background buzz. There is music everywhere, in the lifts, in the bars, at the hairdresser's, in the endless waits of the call centres, this is what has made people anesthetized towards active listening to music. The mainstream wants this, it wants passive listening, this dramatically increases the power of record companies by giving them decision-making ability without any conflict. If you only listen to what's on the radio without an ounce of research or musical interest, they decide, not you. Fortunately, there is a large segment of the public who love music deeply and who will continue to keep rock and its artistic value alive, only that this will never make it to television.
Our blog tries to make rock and roll the music most listened to by young people, do you have an opinion or advice?
Yours is a beautiful mission and we fully share it. Honestly, in recent years I've noticed a higher concentration of young people at rock and metal concerts and this bodes well for the fate of the genre. I was recently interviewed for the school newspaper of a Florentine high school and was asked the same question. The first thing that caught my eye was that out of more than sixty guys I was in front of only three of them had ever attended and attended a concert. I think the problem arises from the lack of consideration that our schools and consequently families attribute to music and its dissemination. My advice is to encourage young people to go to a concert, to experience that wonderful feeling that is sharing such an intense musical experience with others. Singing out loud, dancing and experiencing the emotion of a live concert is the most fun there can be, young people just have to discover this form of socialization and it's up to us to push and exhort them.
What was your best concert?
Ah well a bit difficult to say, we have had the honor of sharing the stage with so many great artists and playing in spectacular locations during our career and choosing just one will be difficult. Trying to narrow the field, I say Villa Ada - Rome Meets the World, it was 2019 and we shared the stage with Garbage, the splendid setting of the Villa Ada park combined with a warm audience created a unique magic, I will always carry with me a wonderful memory. Michel says Circolo Magnolia this August, we were together at the Palaye Royale in Milan, a very young and incredibly lively audience, many of them knew Demons by heart and it was very nice. Ferruccio instead says I-Days 2017, the opening date for Radiohead, he had just joined the band and it was only his second concert with Violet Blend, he found himself catapulted in front of 65,000 people, but I assure you that he withstood the blow very well.
Who are your favorite artists?
If I had to choose just one band that I could listen to indefinitely, I would definitely choose Seether. I love Shaun Morgan's voice and their songs are pure poetry. My other great musical love is Jack White, his genius surprises me every time. Michel says Queen, Toto and Dream Theater, for the technique put into the service of the song and the creative genius. Ferruccio chooses the Muse, for the sounds, for the care and the search for the "different", Dream Theater, for their authenticity, singular style over time always faithful to the ever-changing musical era, and Foo Fighters for the true strength of rock 'n' roll, the grit and the ability to always guess the right combinations, as well as to craftsmanship and experience disguised as simplicity.
Tell us about your first concert.
Our first performance together was in a nice live music venue in Florence which unfortunately closed a few years later, it was called Full Music. We fixed the date directly with the owner, we were really inexperienced and it was a real bet. I can say that we entered the Florentine music scene in an exuberant way, there were about a hundred people at that concert and it is not so common for our city and for the first concert of a newborn band.
We were both scared and excited by the crowd that night, but in the end I remember a good performance. If I think about all the things that happened after that first concert they seem like they happened hundreds of years ago, but that's not the case.
